What is a Mastectomy Bra

Hi welcome to my first blog: What is a mastectomy bra?

I’m often asked what is the difference between a regular bra and a mastectomy bra.

A mastectomy bra can be worn by anyone, the main difference is the hidden integrated pockets, designed to hold a prosthesis or breast form in place; rather like an extra lining.

Mastectomy bras tend to have a wider under band. the under band is where most of the support comes from(80%), and therefore is an important feature of the bra.

The straps on a mastectomy bra are often wider and may also be padded for extra comfort and support. Mastectomy bras need to offer security as well as comfort. Supportive side seams help with this, side seams tend to be of a higher cut helping to cover scar tissue. Softer materials also tend to be used in the construction of a mastectomy bras.

Mastectomy bras tend to be non wired as the wires can sometimes irritate scar tissue. Wired bras are generally recommended to be avoided until your scar tissue has healed. Often ladies don’t wish to return to wired bras preferring the comfort and support offered from a good non wired bra that they probably didn’t think that they would get.

Mastectomy bras are designed with comfort, security and femininity in mind, they are not exclusive to ladies having undergone breast surgery, with some ladies preferring the features and comfort that a mastectomy bra has to offer.

Hope this blog as helped x
